Why Garden Maintenance Should Never Be an Afterthought
So What Can I do?
The basics, like pruning and weeding, are essential. They stop plants from taking over and help keep the design looking balanced and fresh. On top of that, it’s important to keep up with seasonal jobs:
In spring, Lifting and dividing plants, adding plants where gaps appear, introducing supports and structures to contain growing perennials, mulching borders to enrich the soil and lock in moisture, create more plants for the garden by taking softwood cuttings of your favourite flowering shrubs, sowing annual flower seed.
In Summer, monitoring irrigation throughout the garden, planting annuals, adding support to plants as they grow, keeping repeat flowering plants blooming by regular deadheading and seasonal cutting back perennials, to ensure strong flowering and sturdy growth, planting annuals and non tender plants for a summer show.
In autumn, clearing fallen leaves from lawns and paths to be collected and turned into leaf mould, turning compost heaps, planting bulbs for seasonal interest, pressure washing terraces to keep clean and prevent slips and trips, storing frost tender plants away under glass, leaving out food and water for birds and wildlife.
In winter, Protecting tender plants under fleece from winter frost and snow, taking hardwood cuttings, ensuring mowing equipment is serviced ahead of spring, cleaning out sheds and greenhouses and insulating, ensuring wildlife have access to unfrozen water and food.
Soil health and irrigation are just as crucial. Plants need nutrients and water, especially in dry spells, to grow strong and healthy. And don’t forget to keep an eye out for pests and diseases—spotting issues early and dealing with them quickly can stop small problems from spreading.
