Japanese Woodland Stroll Garden

Inspired by the property’s tranquil woodland surroundings, this garden embraces the balance of light and dark, drawing on the Eastern philosophy of yin and yang. Constructed by Viridis Landscapes, it blends natural materials with contrasts of light and dark stones. The careful use of shou sugi ban charred wood, smooth and textured planting and a mix of open and shaded spaces, all come together to create a layered, meditative garden that invites peaceful strolls and quiet reflection.

Eighteen carefully selected glacial boulders form the garden’s backbone, complemented by moss-covered rock walls and delicate maidenhair ferns that evoke the calm beauty of traditional Japanese gardens. Strong feature trees, including Japanese Acers and varied Pinus species, provide structure and seasonal interest, while evergreen ground cover ensures year-round lushness.

Water is a central feature, flowing through copper-clad wooden rills crafted by Raku Timber Framing into a tranquil pool. This calming water element is best enjoyed from a bespoke curved oak bench perched atop two glacial boulders, perfectly positioned to frame views across the pool to a focal Acer. The bench quickly became a cherished retreat, enhancing the contemplative experience.

Practical yet striking, corten steel retaining walls and reclaimed oak steps provide structure and contrast to the soft planting and flowing water. At the garden’s rear, a curved willow screen by Jay Davey Willow offers privacy while adding sculptural charm. The planting, carefully sourced from Kelways Plants, New Wood Trees, Creepers Nursery, and Form Plants, was expertly installed by Bath Garden Design, creating a serene woodland sanctuary the clients deeply enjoy.
